High value care is not a distinct way of practicing medicine, but rather integrates with other aspects of contemporary practice. And thinking about medications from the perspective of high value care highlights these areas of overlap.
- Patient-centered care: Is the cost of these medications affordable to the patient? Is the medication regimen and instructions simple enough for the patient to adhere to and avoid costly harms?
- Systems-based Practice: Can I prescribe a similar generic medication? Will prescribing this medication to our hospital pharmacy be more cost-effective for the system?
- Patient Safety: Should the patient continue this medication? Are there missing medications? Did I confirm with the patient they are taking this medication?
