Ambulatory Medicine
Educational Goals & Overview
The Ambulatory Medicine rotation trains physicians to provide comprehensive care in the outpatient setting, with particular emphasis on providing Primary Care for a panel of continuity patients, with the ultimate goal of acquiring proficiency to independently practice outpatient general internal medicine. Residents are expected to develop clinical skills to diagnose and treat general medical diseases, including common acute medical problems and common chronic diseases, and manage patient populations through the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH).
Residents provide Primary Care to their continuity panel at two sites: Clinic A at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center and the Adult Primary Care Clinic at Mid-Valley Comprehensive Health Center. Clinical experience is supplemented by the didactic series across the three-year residency for categorical residents. The Ambulatory Medicine week also includes outpatient subspecialty clinics, which will allow residents to expand knowledge into the medical subspecialties and understand appropriate referral to medical subspecialties.
The Ambulatory Medicine curriculum is a longitudinal, progressive educational program across the three-year residency. A portion of the curriculum is delivered during the +1 Week, across a 5-week cycle. During intern year, the Profession of Medicine (POM) series, Wellness & Resiliency, and Quality Improvement (PI) Project are integrated with the Ambulatory Medicine curriculum.
Olive View Primary Care Clinic

- Look at your patient schedule ahead of time: Do this in ORCHID by adding your clinic resource (Last name, First name) and then searching for the date of your clinic.
- Pre-chart (“scrub the chart”): Review the last primary care note, including your follow-up plan, along with any interval events and new labs/study results. You can begin to pre-chart your note in ORCHID by using the Provider View > Clinic tab and updating the Consolidated Problem List and writing your preliminary findings in the Assessment & Plan section.
- For phone visits, the telehealth workstation is located in 2B172. The door code is located in your Welcome to Ambulatory Block emails but you can also reach out to the chiefs for the door code.
MS Teams Channel for Tele-Preceptorship
For telework for video clinic sessions, be ready to connect to your preceptor using MS Teams. Use the OV IM Preceptorship team > Primary Care @OV channel.
When You Start
- For the door code to the exam area, ask the Chief Residents. Please keep this code secure!
- Huddle and cuddle with your clinic team: Identify patient needs including vaccination and routine screening ahead of time to get orders and referrals going.
