Hematology-Oncology

Educational Goals & Overview

The goal of rotations in the intensive care unit is to train residents in the treatment and management of critical and complex patients. The rotations include an emphasis on procedural skills and competence in difficult conversations.

Hematology-Oncology Ward

The overall purpose of the Hematology-Oncology Inpatient Ward Rotation is to train residents to competently care for complicated, hospitalized patients presenting with acute signs and symptoms of leukemia or aggressive lymphoma, undergoing treatment with inpatient treatment protocols, or experiencing cancer treatment-related side effects. They will learn to recognize the common presenting signs and symptoms of oncologic emergencies, to perform the standard diagnostic evaluation to better define the causative disorder and implement early intervention and longer-term management, to provide supportive care for malignancies and common toxicities of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and to participate in the team approach to the transition of terminal patients to palliative care.

Orientation

Before You Start

  • Review the Hematology-Oncology Wards Orientation Packet: Hematology-Oncology Wards Orientation
  • Review the Hematology-Oncology Wards Curriculum: Hem-Onc Wards curriculum
  • Review your schedule on AMION, including days off. You should average one day off per week.
  • Expect an email from the Chief Residents, which will include hand-off assignments.
  • One day prior to your rotation, contact the outgoing housestaff for sign-out.

When You Start

  • Receive hand-off from the cross-cover by meeting the Night Float Intern in the Resident Lounge from 6:30-7:00am.
  • You can sign out to the respective Red or Blue night float intern at 4:00pm
  • Make sure your pager is unforwarded!

Hematology-Oncology Consult

The overall purpose of the Hematology-Oncology consult service rotation is to train residents to competently care for hospitalized patients and outpatients presenting with signs and symptoms of malignancy or benign or malignant hematologic disorders. They will learn to recognize the common presenting signs and symptoms, to perform the standard diagnostic evaluation to better define the causative disorder, when and how to consult a Hematologist-Oncologist, and to appreciate the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of malignancy and hematologic disorders.

Before You Start

On the day before your consult rotation, page the Hematology-Oncology Fellow. Find out if you should get sign-out on any inpatient consults and what you should expect the first day of your rotation (when to round, where to meet, any didactics or clinic, etc.).

The Hem-Onc team usually meets in the fellows room in the Special Treatment Center (STC) on the 2nd floor.

To determine the Hem-Onc Fellow on call, go to the OV Intranet > Department of Medicine page. Or call the Operator by dialing “0” and ask for the Hem-Onc Fellow on-call. Then to page the fellow through AMION.

When You Start

The Hem-Onc team usually meets in the fellows room in the Special Treatment Center (STC) on the 2nd floor.

To determine the Hem-Onc Fellow on call, go to the OV Intranet > Department of Medicine page. Or call the Operator by dialing “0” and ask for the Hem-Onc Fellow on-call. Then to page the fellow, log-in to AMION, go to paging, go to the Fellows drop-down menu, select the appropriate fellow.
