Aspergillus is extremely common in the environment (think black mold), but only rarely causes invasive infection particularly with severe immunosuppression:
- immunosuppressive therapy, e.g. for acute leukemia, hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplant
- severe, prolonged neutropenia
- high-dose, prolonged glucocorticoid use
Treatment options include the following, but notably excludes the common antifungal fluconazole:
- Voriconazole (triazole)
- Micafungin (echinocandin)
- Amphotericin
Read this article to learn more about use of the triazole compared with amphotericin. Keep in mind the drug-specific risks and benefits of either antifungal.
