Update to Inpatient Discharge Workflow
The inpatient discharge workflow is getting a major update in ORCHID! Beginning February 14 (Valentine’s Day), (1) a new discharge workflow page will be available along with (2) a discharge gap checker to ensure all components of discharge are completed. Learn about the updates in this video:
Update to Telemetry Workflow
Place the indication for telemetry (class, duration, diagnosis) in the Special Instructions on the Admit to Inpatient and Cardiac Monitoring orders. e.g. “Class I, 72h, CHF”. Bed flow and nurses will review these indications to ensure telemetry is utilized appropriately. Guidelines are here: OVMC Telemetry Guidelines
Diet Orders
Inpatient diet orders are getting a refinement to prevent multiple diet orders from being active at the same time. E.g. now you can’t have NPO and Regular Diet simultaneously.
What’s new? ORCHID will allow only one diet order to be active at a time. If a new diet is ordered, it will complete (i.e. discontinue) the previous diet. If NPO is ordered to start at midnight (or use time 0001 to avoid confusion), the NPO start time will be midnight, and the previous diet order along with any snacks and supplements will automatically be marked to stop at midnight.
The new base diet orders come with plenty of selectable modifiers, like “lactose controlled,” “pureed,” and “nectar thickened” liquids.
Snacks and Supplements are separate additional orders to add on top of a base diet.
Note: NPO will not automatically complete tube feed or free water flush orders. Tube feeds and free water flushes should be discontinued separately from the diet.
Update to Patient Death Workflow
When a patient expires, continue to evaluate the patient, record the date/time of death, counsel the family, and document the events in a Death Note and/or Death Summary.
What’s new? Add a new order called Preliminary Cause of Death to: (1) record the date/time of death, and (2) specify the preliminary cause of death.
