Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) via Imprivata
To Enroll in EPCS
- First get “ID Proofed”:
- Present yourself with a state or federal government ID card (e.g. driver’s license, passport) to Sheim Tep or Norman Belisle in the Department of Medicine. They are designated “ID Proofers.” Once your identity and employee number have been verified, the staff will initiate a work ticket to continue the process.
- Notify Gus Chavez about your DEA license. Gus will make a copy of your license for your file and notify the staff administration to update the physician directory.
- Download the Imprivata ID app to your smart device.
- Enroll your device with IT:
- You will need to meet with IT to configure your device to work with ORCHID. IT can be found in the Main Hospital on the 1st Floor.
To Use EPCS
Remember, California state law now requires prescribers to enroll in and consult CURES prior to prescribing controlled substances. For more information and links, go to the CURES page.
EPCS through ORCHID follows a similar workflow as e-prescribing other medications in ORCHID. Review this EPCS Job Aid for details.
In brief, to electronically prescribe controlled substances:
- Search/Select and modify your prescription order, including the pharmacy to which you want to route the medication. Then click “Sign.”
- When the e-prescription window pops up, select the checkbox next to each controlled substance. Then click “Sign.”
- Primary authentication factor:
A new pop-up will asked for your network password (“****”). This is your normal ORCHID password. Enter this password and press enter. - Second authentication factor:
The pop-up will then ask for your second-factor authentication. At this point you should either:- See a new pop-up notification on your smart device asking to approve or deny a new e-prescription. You can swipe and select to “Approve.” This step does require that your smart device has internet data access.
- Or, open the Imprivata ID app on your smart device. The app will given you a 6-digit token that you should then enter into ORCHID. This step is helpful if your smart device cannot access internet data.
That’s it! No more paper.
On the first of each month, you will receive a monthly report in your ORCHID Message Center listing your past month’s EPCS activity. You should review this for accuracy and illicit activity.
